Orphans Arrive in Canada
OTTAWA - Twenty-four Haitian orphans left their shattered country Sunday to embark on new lives in Canada, stepping off a plane into the crisp early morning Ottawa air and into the warm embraces of their new parents.
From the workers who carried the little wide-eyed bundles on a bus from the Canadian Embassy to the airport, to the Air Canada volunteers who gently stroked their bellies to help them sleep on the plane, the children were the recipients of a tremendous outpouring of care - before they even reached their anxious parents.
"When I seen that plane land, I was overwhelmed," said Gerry Naugler, the proud new father of Dakemsia, 10, and Deulando, 4.
"When I seen the children coming off, I felt so relieved for all the Canadian families who were reunited in there this morning."
On the way to her new country, though Dakemsia was intently watching an in-flight movie, she said she was looking forward to being in Ca-NAH-da.
"I'm not scared," she said, matter-of-factly. "I'm excited."
The Air Canada Airbus A-330 touched down just before 7 a.m. and the children, weary from the overnight trek and many wearing little more than sandals, shorts and T-shirts, were wrapped in blankets and whisked inside to greet their new families.
Several of the older children flashed bright white smiles at the cameras as they peered above their blankets.
The arrival marks the start of a new life for the children who have not only survived the deaths of their parents but the near-destruction of their country.
"Orphan kids are, we find, very, very resilient and it just impresses me so much how much they can take and withstand," said Peter Deklerk, who accompanied four children from the Canadian Embassy. "The resiliency of these kids is just amazing."
The federal government took steps last week to fast track adoptions already in the works before this month's earthquake in Haiti.
Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said officials were expecting upwards of 50 kids on the flight, but there were logistical and orphanage staff problems on the ground in Haiti.
There are 90 children already cleared to come to Canada, and another 90 being fast-tracked through the immigration system.
He said the government hopes to have the vast majority of children in Canada within a few days.
"There are issues around human trafficking," he said.
"We are only going to facilitate the adoption of children where the relevant provincial child welfare agency has clearly indicated to us that the parents are qualified... We're not going to rush if there is not such approval because we need to be 100 per cent sure that kids are coming to qualified adoptive families."
Sunday's arrival of the very precious cargo marked the end of a three-and-a-half-year adoption process for Naugler, from Moncton, N.B. He said his two biological children have also been excited to meet their new siblings.
"I'm looking forward to my family just to be complete," he said, his voice choked with emotion.
Jean Robert Vavar, from Montreal, waited three years for his adopted son, 14-year-old Jordan Noel, to come to Canada to join six other children Vavar and his wife have. It was an emotional moment to finally see his new son alive, after all he has been through.
"It's the best day for me and my family," Vavar said.
The flight also brought more than 100 evacuees, who burst into applause as the plane landed in Ottawa.
The younger children - several are under two years old - simply curled up on volunteers' laps and slept through their first airplane flight. But the older ones went right for the earphones and began excitedly flipping through options on the in-flight entertainment screens in front of them.
Jessica, 9, took out her earphones long enough to give her feelings on Canada ("It's cool") and that she and her sister - Sarah, 4 - are prepared for the comparatively chilly temperatures in B.C., where they will live.
Two of the children had to be taken to hospital with fevers and gastroenteritis symptoms, said Dr. Guy Riendau, who treated them on the flight.
They would likely be released from hospital later Sunday, as they may even just need some hydration, said Riendau.
"Most of them were all right," he said.
"Some of them had thrown up and had a couple episodes of diarrhea."
Of course, Riendau added, some of the kids threw up because they just ate too much.

1) This article talks about how it is time for the Haitian orphans to leave Haiti. There are many proud Canadians who are happy to adopt the orphans. At the beginning of the article it says that there are 24 children on the plane on their way to Canada, 90 more waiting for their flight and another 90 going through the immigration system.
ReplyDelete2) PULL FACTORS :
*cleaner water
*cleaner air
*richer country
*longer life expectancy
*more food
*less disease
*better health service
3) Yes, I think that Canada should be allowed to adopt immigrant children. The Haitian kids are orphans and if people don't help them what will they do? They are people to so I don't see a problem with Canadians adopting Haitians.
1. In the article 'Orphans arrive in Canada' it talks about orphans from Haiti coming to live in Canada with new families. It also talks about how the kids are still being strong even through what they have been through.
ReplyDelete2. I think some pull factors that would bring people from Haiti into Canada are :
-Good food
-clean water
-People in Haiti speak French and in Canada there are people who speak French.
-more jobs
3.In my opinion I think that Canadians should be allowed to adopt children from other countries, because I don't really think that it matters where the person comes from and if they like the family and the family is a good adoption family and they have a good home then they should be allowed to adopt the child.
1. In this article, it gave information on the children like their ages sickness and of course their name. Also it gave quotes of the children when they were on the flight and how some sickness' occurred during the flight, and what the doctors evaluated. The sickness' were simply they ate too much or were not hydrated. It also gave quotes of the adoptive parents, and their emotion for the children. Note that the orphans parents would be very thankful for saving their child from harms way.
ReplyDelete2. Some pull factors to Canada form Haiti are unlimited amount of food, parents willing to adopt the orphans of Haiti. Also there is clean water and we are extremely welcoming to them. We came with open arms to help almost immediately. Also maybe free health insurance, but i don't think the children know exactly that we have that rather then USA does. Another would be we are not a poor country we are rather wealthy and those kids brought from Haiti will get the chance to go to school and learn just like all the other Canadian children. Those are some of the pull factors I thought of.
3. Well it depends first I think we should give our own children the opportunity to be adopted rather then adopting from Mexico or China. But in this case yes I do think that we should (but are allowed)to adopt Haitians because of the catastrophe that happened. So thats why i think more of us Canadians should save a child from Haiti or even 2, 3, 4 kids because we already know that our orphans have safety and food and water and all the other expenses. Wouldn't you adopt a child from Haiti knowing you will save a life?
1. This article was all about the orphans, and children from Haiti. They were allowed to enter Canada, to join their new families. The children were of all different ages, even some under 2 years old. Some of the children, were sick from the plane ride, or just eating too much. Some of the families that adopted, already had children, and were excited to get another addition. Some of the children were going to Ottawa, and others B.C.
ReplyDelete2.The pull factors were that:
- clean water
- lots of food
- families
- better job opportunities
- Canada is a wealthy nation/country.
- Canada has lots of farming, and land for rent, or to buy.
- Canada is a multi cultural country
- They have 2 different languages(English,French)
3. Canada should be allowed to adopt children from other countries, because everybody is the same on the inside, and everyone should be allowed to be treated with respect. Even if they are from a different country. No I don't think that we should adopt people from our country first because, right at the moment Haitians need our help! Children are dying in these conditions, they need to be helped. They are trapped under rubbel, or living in a house with the roof caved in, and family members dead infront of they. They are devastated. They have no family anymore.
1) The Article “Orphans Land in Canada” is about the orphans in Haiti being rescued and adopted here in Canada. Many parents line up to see their new children, some have been waiting to adopt for more than 4 years and finally get their wish. All the kids from 5 and up are excited to be welcomed into a new country and family, the plane was only expected to carry 90 children but also carried over 100 refugees to Canada looking for a new home. Most of the children were very excited to be on an airplane others which were mostly under two years old fell asleep on the volunteer laps, others were excited and jumped right onto to the seats and started watching the movies and television. Most people immigrating into Canada were shocked by how cold it was. Many of the cildren got sick from the food , but that was because they ate to much food.
ReplyDelete2)Some pull factors that would draw people to Canada from Haiti are :
-Housing
-Food
-Jobs
-New Families
-French Speaking Places
-Clean Water
-A Wealthy Country
-Easy food providing(have alot of farms)
3)In my opinion I think people should be able to adopt children in Haiti. Mainly because if your country was destroyed and you have passed away, wouldn't you want your children to be adopted and loved and given a home food and clothes. I think that that would make more sense, but also I think we should still remember about the orphans in Canada and not to forget them but we should also take Haiti into our country. Also if we adopt Haitian Children some of them could be adopted into a french speaking family, french is what Haitians speak. If we also adopted from other countries it means that we will be helping other children with no family food or housing or even education. I think we should be able to adopt children from other countries, yes it would be a a nice thing to do but we also cant forget about the Candian orphans either. We should be able to adopt from other countries but thats just my oppinion.
1. I think this article was about all the children who came from Haiti to Canada. The kids were really excited about going to canada they were not scared of the new setting said one of the volenters.
ReplyDelete2. I think the pull factors for people in Haiti are the earth quake, the poverty, and (for the orphans) the death of their parents.
3. I think that you should be able to adopt kids from any country because we are one of the richest nations, And the kids probably come from a poor nation. If I was poor I would want my kids to grow up in a different country so they could have a happy life.
